The BJP on Friday questioned the authenticity of the Tehelka sting operation saying there were too many inaccuracies in the claims of the magazine. BJP spokesperson Ravishanker Prasad also questioned the impartiality of Tehelka asking “How many stings have they conducted on Congress?”

Prasad said the riots were an unfortunate episode and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was now trying to focus only on development. “He has made it clear several times that the focus is on the unprecedented economic growth of Gujarat. The sting operation is an attempt to bring about a sharp communal divide ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections,” Prasad said.

The BJP spokesperson said if there is any truth in the content of the tapes, the judicial process would take care of it.

“Some can be empty boasting. Some could have been trapped. But if at all there is some truth in it, the judicial process is there to take care of it,” Prasad said of the content of the tapes.

The BJP leaders pointed out that many claims in the tapes could be easily proved wrong. BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley said Modi never went to Naroda Patiya during the riots as claimed in the sting operation, and this can be easily verified. “There are several other such discrepancies in the tapes if one were to get into the details,” Jaitley said.

Meanwhile, the RSS termed the Tehelka sting a “campaign against Hindu organisations”. “There is hardly any truth in it,” RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said. “An effort has been made to create issues where no issues exist, it shows the bankruptcy of the people who oppose Modi,” he said.
