NEW DELHI, DEC 24: Call it a move to placate its allies or another step taken by the BJP to suggest that it is fast learning the art of managing coalition politics. In the list of chairpersons of standing committees prepared by the Government, the allies figure prominently. The BJP has had to rest content with just one, while its allies have cornered the remaining six standing committees earmarked for the alliance in the Lok Sabha.

There are altogether 18 standing committees. While the Lok Sabha has 12, the rest are with the RS. By virtue of their strengths in the Lower House, the BJP was entitled to nominate its men as heads of five committees, while the Congress was given three committees.

But in the list prepared by the Government, the BJP has only one standing committee to its credit. The TDP, DMK, JD U, Shiv Sena, Indian National Lok Dal and the Trinamool Congress have cornered the remaining five.

While veteran BJP leader Laxmi Narayan Pandey has been made the chairman of the standing committeeattached to the Defence Ministry, Trinamool Congress MP Krishna Bose has been nominated as the chairperson of the committee attached to the External Affairs Ministry.

Other allies who have cornered crucial standing committees are Sena Anant Geete Urban and Rural Development, DMK S.S. Palanimanickam 8212; Agriculture, JD U Devendra Prasad Yadav Food and Civil Supplies, INLD Sushil Kumar Indora Labour and Welfare and TDP Railways.

But the BJP has managed to cornered some important House Committees. South Delhi MP has been made the head of the committee on public undertakings.
