Alarmed over the fact that nearly a dozen BJP legislators were campaigning for Congress or Samajwadi Party nominees in these elections, the state leadership decided to expel three of its MLAs from the party today.
‘‘By expelling these three MLAs who indulged in anti-party activities, we have conveyed a message to others to mend ways,’’ said state party chief Vinay Katiyar.
However, the party MLAs did not look too affected. ‘‘I had quit the BJP mentally two years back. Now, I am free to support the candidate of my choice,’’ said Myankeshwar Singh, the legislator from Tiloi in Rae Bareli. Singh had been campaigning in favour of Sonia Gandhi. Another BJP legislator from Maudha, Badshah Singh, has also been expelled along with Narendra Verma, the MLA from Sitapur.
