After recurring incidents that left Amar Singh feeling “humiliated” at the hands of the Congress-led UPA Government, the Samajwadi Party leader is back to wearing a smile and bragging about how he has managed to score over the Congress by scuttling the chances of any back-channel understanding with the SP on the nuclear deal. Congress hopes rested on informal talks with ex-Congressmen in SP—Salim Sherwani and Naresh Agarwal. However, Amar Singh’s story is that he managed to get Prakash Karat to visit his house, precipitating the formalisation of the UNPA headed by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and snuffing out any hopes that the Congress may have harboured about a possible deal. The last word, however, say sources, is still to be said.
