Karachi, Aug 28: Pakistan People8217;s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto says the country8217;s political and economic woes can only be resolved by the appointment of a new government of politicians, technocrats, military leaders and spy agency chiefs.

In an interview, Benazir said both she and her main rival Prime Minister Sharif should step aside and allow a 8220;consensus figure8221; to head a government.

Benazir said no civilian government had been able to control Pakistan8217;s multi-layered intelligence system, so its power has to be acknowledged. The military, meanwhile, is the only organised institution in the country and if anything happens to it the country will turn into another Somalia.8221;

The admission that politics may have failed Pakistan comes from a woman once hailed as a champion of democracy in a country ruled for decades by the military.
