MUMBAI, May 6: The Bombay Electricity and Suburban Transport BEST introduced automatic electro-pneumatic doors in double-decker buses on Tuesday.

To start with, they have been installed in two buses operating on the CST-NCPA route. By the first week of July, the undertaking proposes to have them in 50 buses. Additional general manager of BEST A N Shanbhag said automatic doors became necessary in double-decker buses as it was found that most accidents take place when a passenger tries to board or jump off when the bus is in motion.

quot;We decided to have such doors on our buses so that this is prevented. It will reduce the accident rate and passengers can travel comfortably, quot; he said.

Shanbhag added that the new doors at the entry and the exit points will prove useful on buses that are run on short routes of about three kilometres.
