Within days of proposing a performance-based payment scheme for cricketers the BCCI, it seems, is now ready to take a U-turn. The proposed scheme that made headlines in the wake of India8217;s dismal exit from the Champions Trophy hadn8217;t gone well with the players.
Many see this as the main reason for the BCCI shelving the new plan. Besides, the complications involved in calculating the performance-based emoluments also prompted the move.
Speaking to The Indian Express, a top BCCI functionary 8212; who is playing a key role in contract negotiations with the players 8212; disclosed that the new system will be incentive-based and would be finalised by December end.
8220;We realised that the payment scheme based on individual performance was not practical. It isn8217;t viable to assess each player and work out a separate payment for everybody. Instead, we will offer the entire team incentives if it does well,8221; he said.
Besides, the official also added the poor run in South Africa didn8217;t make things easier. 8220;We had a lot of interesting things in mind to work on. But going by the current poor performance of the Indian team, we are too worried to pay attention to these things,8221; he said.
