NEW DELHI, NOV 18: Ignoring West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu8217;s plea that he be relieved of his duties in view of his indifferent health, the CPIM has prevailed on the 86-year-old leader to continue in office. At least for now.
The CPIM Polit Bureau, which began its two-day meeting here, took up the issue of Basu8217;s long-pending request to be allowed to retire from active politics and decided to ask him to continue. However, the party has decided to lessen his burden and will soon choose a deputy chief Minister who would take on a major share of the chief minister8217;s duties.
Basu has decided to continue in his job, even though he expressed his helplessness saying, quot; What can I do. They the party leadership have asked me to continue. I have to listen to my partyquot;.
What the CPIM8217;s insistence on Basu continuing in office reveals is the confusion that prevails in the party8217;s West Bengal state unit over who should succeed the venerable Chief Minister who has been in the chair for 22 years. However,Basu has made it clear that he will remain in office only so long as his health permits.
quot;I will stay as long as my health allows me to carry on with my work, quot; he said.
