CALCUTTA, FEB 12: An expensive error by defending champion Basad Ali marred his chances of retaining the title as Vijay Kumar moved to the top of the leader board at the end of the third day of the Cyanamid Open Golf Championships, here today.

Vijay shot an one-under 71 to aggregate four-under 212. Overnight leader Basad Ali was two strokes behind after playing a two-over 74, which included a triple bogey on the 16th. Indian Open champion Feroz Ali played a two-under today to tally level par 216.

Basad Ali looked all set to carry his lead on to the last round when he made a terrible mistake on the 16th. A perfect drive had left Basad with a wedge shot from 70 yards, but he pushed it into the green and two-putted for a triple bogey.

Vijay played a round which included five birdies and four bogies. He made a bogey from the green edge on the third and then three-putted the 14th.

Scores (after 54 holes): 212 Vijay Kumar (71, 70, 71); 214 Basad Ali (69,71,74); 216 Feroz Ali (74, 72, 70); 217Indrajit Bhalotia (74, 68, 75).

Vijay crosses million mark

MUMBAI: Vijay Kumar for the second year in succession has crossed million rupee mark and still tops the race in gaining Rs. 5.76 lakh Mahindras champion Golfer of the Year award.

Vijay till date had amassed Rs 10.1 lakh and has 278.25 points. He is followed by Shiv Prakash of Kanpur with Rs. 9.30 lakh earning and 236.50 points. Basad Ali and Ali Sher of Calcutta are on third and fourth placings with Rs. 5.20 lakh and Rs. 5.05 lakh in prize money respectively.

Vandana keeps lead

NEW DELHI: Overnight leader Vandana Agarwal failed to maintain her form, carding a three par 75 but held on to her lead with an aggregate of 147 on the second day of the Biloo Sethi Golf Challenge trophy here today.

Anjali Chopra, who came up with the best round of the day at the Delhi Golf Course here carding an even par 72, was following second with Shruti Khanna at four-over 148. Shruti fired a one over 73.

Nonita Lal Qureshi and Urvashi Sodhiwere tied at 150 for the fourth place. Nonita had a two over 74 while Urvashi came up with a three over 75 on the second day.

The duo were followed by National champion Parnita Garewal, who played much below her potential in her five over 77 to yesterday’s four over 76. Her aggregate of 153 placed her at the sixth spot.

Sixteen of the participants qualified for the Ladies All India Championship, which starts here on Monday.

Vandana began well with a birdie on the first. But then she bogeyed the next and had a double bogey on the third hole. But she came up even par scores on the remaining six holes to take the turn on two over 38.

In the back nine, Vandana mishandled the 10th but played par on the remaining eight holes to tally one over 37.

Anjali was focussed on her game this morning and completed the front nine in two under 34 with birdies on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and a solitary bogey on the 4th. In the back nine, she faltered and could get the card of two over 38.
