Barcelona8217;s 3-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday brought an end to a four-match winless run but coach Frank Rijkaard was still unhappy after three of his players were sent off in a game that set a Spanish league record for red cards.

Barcelona and Espanyol both finished the game with eight men, after referee Alfonso Pino Zamorano broke the record of five red cards set in a game between Espanyol and Real Mallorca in 1987.

8216;8216;We have to correct our tendency to tackle players in control of the ball when they have their backs to goal,8217;8217; Rijkaard said. 8216;8216;What can a player do with his back to goal? We have to think about it and keep on the pressure. We8217;ve had a lot of cards for this reason this season and I hope we take it as a lesson.8217;8217;

Unless Barcelona successfully appeal against the sendings-off, Rijkaard will be without centre-back Rafael Marquez, winger Ricardo Quaresma and midfielder Philip Cocu for at least one league game.

That will leave the coach with serious selection problems for next weekend8217;s league game at home to Celta Vigo, especially as midfielder Thiago Motta will be out with an ankle injury for around a month.

Rijkaard described the Espanyol game as 8216;8216;strange and emotional8217;8217; but said he had no particular complaints about the referee. 8216;8216;The referee ran the game in the same style from the start and in this respect it was fair,8217;8217; Rijkaard said. 8216;8216;It wasn8217;t a particularly hard game, though.8217;8217;
