Mohan Bagan won the battle of nerves, edging past Goan outfit Dempo SC 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out to storm into the final of the Federation Cup at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan this evening.

Dempo8217;s Ranty Martins drew first blood through a left-footer in the 26th minute. Bagan equalised through Bhaichung Bhutia, who found the net with a diving header off a Lal Kamal Bhowmick floater in the 57th minute. The visitors took lead one again in the 74th minute when their Brazilian striker Roberto Silva Beto beat Favio Tavel in the top box and unleashed a left-footed grounder.

The experienced Bhutia came to Bagan8217;s rescue once again. He capitalised on Dempo custodian8217;s mistake to grip an Eduwardo flick inside the box and tapped in neatly. The two teams were level at 2-2 after the extra time.

In the penalty shoot-out, Jose Ramirez Barreto, Dipendu Biswas, Favio Tavel, Lal Kamal Bhowmick, Dulal Biswas and Dharamjit Singh scored for the winners while Beto, Climax Lawrence, Valeriand Regblo, Joaquim Abranches and Nasimento Silveira scored for Dempo.

In a roller-coaster of a match, both teams had to play with 10 men for 56 minutes after Dempo striker Ranty Martins and Bagan substitute Lalampuiya were sent off in the 64th minute. Play was halted for five minutes following the teams8217; violent behaviour.

Bagan had control over their opposition in the first half, mainly in the central midfield area. Bhutia was at his best, showing his class in the attacking zone.
