PUNE, Nov 17: Guo Keli of China ended the dream run of Chetan Baboor when he recovered from a first game loss to win the Asia Cup men8217;s title at the Balewadi Complex.
The Chinese have two reasons to celebrate. The women8217;s title too was won by their country 8212; top seed Wang Chen sweeping aside the challenge of Korean Kim Boon Sik 21-15, 21-15, 21-16 in 15 minutes.
Although Baboor caused some anxiety in the Chinese camp after he had snatched the first game, Keli kept his cool and came back strongly to win 19-21, 21-17, 21-17, 21-9.
Indian coach Kamlesh Mehta expressed his satisfaction over Baboor8217;s performance. 8220;Chetan played very well. I think the second and third games were very close. The one or two points he lost when he was down 16-17 and 18-19, made the difference.8221;
Baboor was off to a flyer, winning the first game in just 10 minutes. The jam-packed hall gave him a standing ovation. But he soon ran out of ideas as Keli began placing the ball. The Chinese led from the start in the second game. Baboor did show some signs of recovery at 17-18 but two backhand returns that he netted put paid to all his efforts and he lost 17-21.
In the third game, Keli maintained a lead of over five points. Baboor did catch up to make it 17-18 but the Chinese proved too strong. Three points later, the Chinese was up 2-1. In the fourth game, Baboor just gave up. He was totally outclassed. There was no sign of a fightback. It was all over in eight minutes.
Keli and Wang Chen were richer by 5250 each while Baboor and Kim Boon Sik pocketed 2250 each.
Men8217;s top seed, China8217;s Lin Zhigang pipped Leung Chu Yan of Hong Kong 21-17, 17-21, 21-15, 21-14 to finish third while Japanese Takahashi Miyoko won 21-22, 16-21, 9-21, 21-12, 21-19 over Wong Ching to finish 3rd in women8217;s.
