CHENNAI, July 10: A 50-year-old woman was today relieved of her gold chain, worth about Rs 30,000 by an autorickshaw driver in the posh Shastri Nagar area of the city, even as local residents remained mute spectators. The woman, a newcomer to the city, engaged the autorickshaw to go to a tailor shop, and, on the return journey, was taken by a different route to a part of the area which was unfamiliar to her. The autorickshaw driver then attempted to strangle her, while residents, who came out hearing her screams, made no effort to intervene. She was then relieved of her chain and pushed out of the vehicle.
