Auckland, March 10: Australia’s seemingly endless bid to re-write cricketing history continues on Saturday when the first Test against New Zealand begins at Auckland’s Eden Park.

With the World record for the longest winning streak in One-Day cricket already under their belt, the Australians are now targeting the Test record.

Steve Waugh’s all-conquering team have won their last seven Tests and can equal the longest Australian streak of eight if they win in Auckland.

A 3-0 clean sweep of the series will put them within striking distance of West Indies’ all-time record of 11.

“We want to win every game,” Waugh said. “That’s the way we play.”

Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne is also eyeing a milestone. He needs just five wickets to pass pace bowler Dennis Lillee’s Australian record of 355 Test scalps.

Warne had been looking to pass Lillee’s mark in the recent series win over India but managed just two wickets in the final two Tests.

Waugh said he expected Warne to bag at least five wickets in the first Test because of Eden Park’s reputation as a turning pitch.

“He’ll get them plus tax,” Waugh said. “He’s in real good form and he’s looking forward to this match.

With the wicket expected to take spin, the visitors recalled Colin Miller to their side to replace injured paceman Damien Fleming.

Damien Martyn was also chosen to play his first Test for more than six years.

New Zealand, who scored a morale-boosting win over Australia in the final match of their recent limited overs series, have also made a change to their side, recalling wicketkeeper Adam Parore. He was left out for the One-Dayers.

Teams: Australia: Michael Slater, Greg Blewett, Justin Langer, Mark Waugh, Damien Martyn, Steve Waugh (captain), Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Colin Miller, Glenn McGrath.

New Zealand (from): Stephen Fleming (captain), Craig Spearman, Matthew Horne, Mathew Sinclair, Nathan Astle, Craig McMillan, Chris Cairns, Adam Parore, Daniel Vettori, Simon Doull, Paul Wiseman, Shayne O’Connor.

PONTING OUT FOR SIX MONTHS: Ricky Ponting will be sidelined for six months following surgery on his injured ankle in Sydney on Friday.

Ponting was hoping to be fit for Australia’s One-Day matches against South Africa in Melbourne in August but is now likely to miss the series.

He injured the ankle when he crashed into the fence diving for a ball in a limited overs match against Pakistan earlier this year.

The surgeon who carried out the operation said the injury was worse than initially thought.
