Sixteen-year-old Ashish Kumar created history today when he became the first Indian ever to win a medal at the Asian level in gymnastics, a discipline that Indians are not really known to be proficient in.
Teammates and fans tossed the Allahabad boy up in the air in joy after his bronze win, India8217;s lone medal, on the penultimate day of the third senior Asian gymnastics championships at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium here. Infact, his feat was more impressive because it was only a silver, downgraded because there was a tie.
The 16-year-old, in his choicest event, the floor exercises, tied with Bahlawan Fadi of Syria on 15 points to win the bronze. Kai Zou of China and Ri Jong Song of DPR Korea having tied with 15.500 points won gold. According to rules, in the eventuality of a tie no silver medal is awarded.
With this, India8217;s challenge in the tournament ends as no other Indian has qualified for any other event yet to be gone through.
Ashish, who was a model prospect in the event from the beginning, maintained his calm to meet the expectation. 8220;I told you Ashish will win bronze, if not silver. He has delivered. Besides, this medal is like silver only. Just because of the rules. I am very satisfied,8221; said India coach D. K. Rathore.
8220;Ashish is highly talented. And age is on his side. He will go a long way. He is very good on floor. He needs to concentrate on other apparatus as well to become an all-round gymnast,8221; added Rathore.
Earlier in the day, Yussupova Aliya of Kazakhstan stole the show by winning two gold medals in individual apparatus of rhythmic gymnastics. She won the medals in ball and rope, returning figures of 15.675 and 16.375, respectively.
Sin Unjin of Korea and Japan8217;s Murata Yukari won silver and bronze, respectively, in ball while Zainullina Maiya of Kazakhstan and Murata Yukari of Japan won silver and bronze in rope.
