Artist-writer Bernadette Da Cunha had gone a little quiet after her show Zeitgeist 8212; Spirit of the Time two years back. Yes, there were a few canvases at group shows8230; but nothing as exciting as her latest bit of news: an upcoming group show titled Naked Before God, which has been selected for the annual 10th international Nude Art Show at The Museum of New Art, Parnu, Estonia.
Da Cunha is one of three Indians who have been selected for this exhibition by the celebrated Photography Art Critic of Europe, Edward Lucie-Smith, who is based in London and has curated the show. It8217;s importance has been enhanced by his curatorial intervention.
Says an excited Da Cunha, 8216;8216;In a way I feel quite proud about being one of the few Asians to be selected for this exhibition8230; what8217;s more, Smith has invited me for the Olympic Art Show in Greece in 2004.8217;8217; The artist finds the Parnu Museum of New Art, a fantastic space for exhibiting, since it has lots of natural light which, in the artist8217;s opinion, fits in really well with her work. 8216;8216;The basic material I work with is light and the lens of the camera. My fascination with the female nude stems from my comfort with it. Besides the fact that I find it aesthetically pleasing. I even look at buildings as being male or female which is why I place my nudes against architectural structures,8217;8217; says the artist of her digitally-manoeuvred photographs. 8220;The buildings speak of a bygone history while the human form is a dynamic, constantly changing force,8217;8217; says the self-taught artist.
While the images are playfully erotic, the intention is not only to be provocative. 8216;8216;It is not just nudes but the depiction of nakedness,8217;8217; says Da Cunha. For those of us who didn8217;t get that 8212; her intention is to transcend the mere physicality of the body as being erotic and speak more of a sublime state of being naked in a world where codes of conduct are policed by various levels of morality. Whether she is completely successful in doing so is debatable since the immediacy of the nude figure is difficult to ignore and the line between art and pornography is a thin one.
