The historic bus journey to Lahore from Amritsar had Punjab Chief Minister, Prakash Singh Badal a set of framed tapestries as gifts to the Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Pakistani counterpart Shahbaz Khan. The set of three tapestries were set in two frames each, which depict the six ceremonial aspects in a sequence of the creation of the Khalsa on the day of Baisakhi, April 13, 1699, the establishment of the Khalsa 300 years ago by Guru Gobind Singh.
The man behind the creation of these tapestries is Sanjeev Chandra, a post graduate from the George Washington University, Washington DC, with a Masters in Business Administration. With his experience of eight years in one of the world8217;s largest direct mail companies called Franklin Mint based in Philadelphia, he took over as the European Finance Director for all their Companies associated with Franklin Mint. After eight years he took over the production company of Franklin Mint in Malayasia as Finance Director.
It was in Malayasia that the company undertook all the productions for whatever creation happened in America. Franklin Mint is the world8217;s biggest direct mail company selling collectibles. It creates produces in limited editions based on themes or existing situations. They have the rights of reproducing all the old Rolls Royce and Mercedez Benz in die cast. They take a huge Mercedez Benz and reduce it to 1:24 scale. They further decide whether to use crystal or pewter. The company also works with procelain.
They also have the rights for the productions of dolls of characters in Gone With The Wind. 8220;It may be copying, but copying is all an art from8221;. My thought process evolved with them. I actually started off in the Finance Division, but after taking off their production company in Malayasia he decided to come back to India and start his own company. One year of consultancy in India, and then Sanjeev got into the labels business.
Currently he runs a company called North South Exports which has a back end company called Labels International Pvt Ltd which manufactures labels. 8220;I decided on something as pedestrian as labels, though it is all computer run. After two years in the business I re-energized my thought process back to the US where I had learnt that framed tapestries are extremely acceptable. Franklin Mint had a lot of Frame Tapestries for the Japanese market8221;, says Sanjeev.
Consequently he came up with his first frame Tapestry which was based on a print of the old Harmandir Sahib, from a painting of 1833. It depicts the time when Maharaja Ranjit Singh is sitting before the Parikarma being done. The tedious process of creating the fabric from a polyester yarn took Sanjeev and his team eight months. 8220;The subsequent creation needed the right packaging, framing and environment. To the extent that we had to put a certificate in side the package explaining the product. We have even organized a value club where the buyers were made a part of the North South Collector8217; club through word of mouth we sold a lot of pieces of the Harmandir Sahi tapestries8221;.
Orders from America and Australia were fulfilled. A fairly good response came from Delhi and Chandigarh with Ludhiana being the best sale, bulk of the product was sold to bureaucrats and politicians. The product was launched through direct mail in association with Bank of Punjab on a total return policy in case any damage was done. Sanjeev8217;s next creation was of a picture of Keshgarh Sahib by night.
After these innovative works of Sanjeev had been launched in the market in India and some which had been ordered through direct mail in Australia and America he was commissioned to some tapestry pieces for the Tercentenary celebration of the Khalsa in April 1999. As a result of which he re-created a picture of the creation of Khalsa rearranging it in a sequence of six, three each in two frames. He followed the process of fabricating polyester yarn giving it the required visual. The process takes place in the factory where Sanjeev has all the automatic machines which cater to the cloth making techniques. 8220;I have created these to show that framed tapestries can be put in the multi-million dollar offices and living rooms in India and abroad8221;.
