COLOMBO, JUNE 15: Opener Saeed Anwar hit a patient half-century to help Pakistan to 130 for three in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings of 273 all out at the close on the second day of the first Test on Thursday.

Anwar, dropped by Marvan Atapattu when he was on 22, hit eight boundaries to score his 24th Test half-century and was batting on 56 when play ended.

Captain Moin Khan (31), who promoted himself in the batting order ahead of Inzamam-ul Haq, was the other unbeaten batsman.

Earlier, off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan snapped up two wickets in successive overs after debutant Dilhara Fernando had Mohammad Wasim caught at second slip for only eight.

Younis Khan then helped Anwar steady the Pakistani innings with a second wicket partnership of 51 before he mistimed a drive and was caught for 23 off Muralitharan. Soon afterwards, the spinner claimed Yousuf Youhana for two.

Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis had taken the spotlight in the second session by dismissing tailender Muralitharan to claim his 300th Test wicket in his 65th match.

Only two other Pakistani bowlers — Wasim Akram (399) and Imran Khan (362) — have taken more than 300 wickets in Test cricket.

Waqar finished with three for 50, but Akram has to wait until Sri Lanka’s second innings to claim his 400th Test victim.

Akram managed only one wicket from his 20 overs when he had Mahela Jayawardene caught by wicketkeeper Moin Khan for 77, the highest score in the Lankan innings.

Jayawardene, who hit six boundaries, shared a fourth wicket stand of 67 with Marvan Atapattu (73).

Apart from an eighth wicket partnership of 39 between Jayawardene and Nuwan Zoysa, the rest of the Lankan batting offered little resistence.
