A 24-year-old share broker, Aamir Ali Virani, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home in Chirag Ali Lane in Abids area late on Thursday night.
Abids police station Sub-Inspector S Srinivas said that the young stockbroker suffered huge losses when the Sensex crashed to 8,000 points on Wednesday. This is the second suicide related to the fluctuating fortunes on the share market in the city in less than two months.
According to the police, for the past five years, Aamir, who was unmarried, had been operating a share trading business from his office Omen Solutions on Chirag Ali Lane. His family members claimed that he had invested heavily in the stock market and in the last one month, he had suffered heavy losses. When asked if they suspected any foul play, the family members said they could not see any other reason for his suicide than the tumbling stock market, S-I Srinivas said.
According to the police, Aamir chose to stay back alone at home on Thursday when his parents and other relatives left for Zamat Khana for prayers. “They returned late in the night and found the front door bolted from inside. When Aamir did not respond to their knocking for over one hour, they broke open the door and found him hanging from a ceiling fan,” Abids police said.
His family members told police that Aamir went on buying stocks even when the stock market was going down, hoping that it would recover. Ultimately, when the Sensex fell below 9,000 points, Aamir lost almost all his money. Police suspect that he had invested more than Rs 10 lakh in the share market.
This is the second suicide in the city, following the global market crash. On September 18, Bhupendra, 30, a share broker, had committed suicide with his 25-year-old wife Swati and two-and-a-half-year-old son Akshay at his home in SBH colony in Saidabad area after the Sensex nosedived. Bhupendra blasted an LPG cylinder at his home and all three were charred to death. He was into the share business for more than 10 years.
