With seven people already in custody of Bharatiya Kisan Union for the fourth day, the administration knocked on the doors of the High Court to bail them out of this embarrassing situation. They filed a writ for habeas corpus in High Court in Chandigarh.

Today, a warrant officer specially appointed by the court was sent to Jind with the release order of all those in custody. The order will be served to Ghasiram Nain, state president of BKU tomorrow. ‘‘We want to exhaust all legal action before taking any violent action. Also, they will be exposed adequately that they are indulging in unlawful activity,’’ said Jind deputy commissioner H.S. Dhankhar.

Constable Satvir Singh was taken hostage by BKU workers last night. Earlier this week, DSP Jagdish Nagar, his wife Rajwanti, gunman Amrit Singh, DSP (Vigilance) Ashok Kumar Sheoran, head constable Ram Mehar and a private driver were taken captive by protesting farmers.

Meanwhile, Kandela village, the centre for the struggle, continued to be under siege. With the 24-hour deadline expiring today, the 4-5,000 farmers gathered there are getting increasingly restive for some action. The security has been tightened and the number of barricades increased to prevent vehicles from entering the village.

Strategy meetings are being held in Nain’s hideout in the village. ‘‘The fact that these farmers have left their homes and work to brave this heat means that they are truly disillusioned with the system and are willing to die,’’ said Nain. The administration is also preparing for the worst; police have been placed in a state of readiness in all the adjoining districts and Haryana Armed Police stationed at Madhuban is also proceeding towards Jind.

PTI adds: Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala has ruled out any talks with the protesting farmers.

Chautala said here the protestors were not farmers but anti-social elements taking innocent people into captivity and burning buses. He said action would be taken against the ‘‘anti-social elements’’ as per law at the appropriate time. ‘‘The nature and timing of action cannot be disclosed in advance,’’ the Chief Minister said.
