MUMBAI, JANUARY 30: Russian Garry Kasparov won the Corus Super Grandmasters chess tournament at Wijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands, on Sunday. Kasparov, playing white, defeated the world’s top-ranked player Judit Polgar (Hungary) in 44 moves the 13th and final round to finish the tournament with 9.5 points, according to information available here.

His closest challengers, compatriot Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko (Hungary) drew their final round ties against Loek Van Wely and Michael Adams respectively to remain joint second with 8 points.

India’s Viswanathan Anand also signed off in style, defeating Smpat Lputian (Armenia) with white pieces in 61 moves to catch up with Kramnik and Leko in second place. Alexander Morozevich of Russia scored a fluent win over Predrag Nikolic to finish fifth.

On Saturday, Anand had agreed to a snappy 17-move draw with Jeroen Piket of Netherlands. The match lasted only 21 minutes. Later it was realised that Anand and Piket were both suffering from flu. “Jeroen could hardlysee the pieces and I’m not exactly in the pink either,” Anand reportedly said.
