The fourth edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival, to be held at its regular haven Diggi Palace, will have enough literary celebrities. Between January 21 and 25, Michael Ondaatje, Simon Schama and Vikram Seth will rub shoulders with younger writers like Mohammed Hanif and Basharat Peer, while Sunil Gangopadhyay and K Satchidanandan will ensure that the vernacular is not drowned out. “There are multiple voices in the literary scene, and we’ve included the oral tradition as well,” says festival director Namita Gokhale. So, on flood-lit winter evenings, Tejan Bai will perform the Pandavini or the story of the Mahabharata, while Suhair Hamad from Palestine will speak about West Asia.
