In the backdrop of increased pressure from groups, the 18th session of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) began at the Taj ul Masjid on Friday.

The board is all set to spell out the model nikahnama during the three-day session. And as if to send across a signal, it is for the first time that a session is being held in Bhopal. The last ruler of Bhopal, Sultan Jehan Begum, implemented a clearly defined rights law in the first quarter of the last century.

The board members are also making a bid to clear what they said were misgivings about the model nikahnama. ‘‘There has been a misrepresentation of facts with fears being expressed that the nikahnama would trample upon the rights of Muslim women. Contrary to that belief, it is our resolve to ensure that their rights are protected through the nikahnama,’’ said the board’s general secretary, Maulana Syed Nizamuddin.

Apart from nikahnama, the agenda also includes a proposal for launching a ‘Shariat awakening campaign’.
