THE plush presidential suite at the ITC Park Sheraton, Chennai, is littered with the trappings of an itinerant movie star—plastic-wrapped flowers, complimentary chocolates, bottles of Jack Daniel’s, Smirnoff and Tia Maria… You name it and chances are Shah Rukh Khan’s got one, heck, maybe even two.

But we’re talking about goodies of another variety: Khan’s chipped companions and wireless workhorses. ‘‘In my house, just before my living room, I have an alcove of my own that has close to a zillion wires,’’ he says. ‘‘It keeps me plugged into the world and usually resembles AR Rahman’s studio.’’

The study’s most important piece is the 17” screen laptop. And Khan’s such an expert on the jazzed-up machine that he’s become an agony aunt of sorts for fellow Bollywood citizens. On a recent tour abroad, Khan assisted Priyanka Chopra with the configuration of her new laptop.

Besides the by-now-extensive collection of TAG Heuer watches, Khan now has two Airtel-enabled Blackberry phones, ‘‘I received a new piece recently. It’s great sending e-mails while sitting in the garden and not having to trudge to my computer,’’ he says. Well, it is a big house.

His list of tech baubles can make an envious neighbour out of most gamers: Four Sony PS2s—in both tower and horizontal models (one for almost every bedroom, including son Aryan’s)—and four iPods. ‘‘I didn’t buy all of them, some were given to me by friends. Honestly, I don’t like listening to music on such a high magnitude, but my wife uses one of them.’’

Then there are the two Xbox and two Playstation Portables—one for Aryan and one for him. ‘‘I carry a PSP around everywhere.

It makes for great gaming while travelling,’’ he says. He and Aryan regularly bout over Cricket 2005 and FIFA Street.

The only bit of tech that doesn’t impress the Badshah much is a mobile phone. ‘‘Why should I get a phone that has poor quality pictures with all that zoom and night mode hassles when I can get a Canon that has a 5 mega pixel screen and is smaller and sleeker?’’

That’s right. When you are Mr Khan, why would you settle for anything less than the absolute best.
