NEW DELHI, Sept 1: The police remand of oil manufacturer Kamal Kumar Agarwal has been extended by eight days after the Public Prosecutor (PP) submitted in court that Agarwal needs to be taken to Gujarat to identify various oil factories.

Agarwal was arrested on August 27 and remanded to three days police custody by Metropolitan Magistrate K.S. Mohi. The First Information Report (no. 496/98) was filed under Sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit an offence), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 272 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (sale of noxious food or drink), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC.

The PP submitted yesterday that following Agarwal’s interrogation the police conducted raids at Kamal Oil Mills in Delhi, S.S. Industries in Samaipur Badli, Khandelwal Oil Mill in Daudpur, Rajasthan and Aggarwal Cakes Ltd in Alwar. Six samples were taken from Kamal Oil Mills, 12 from Khandelwal Oil Mill and nine from Aggarwal Cakes Ltd.

Although the police spent a day trying to trace Ambika Oil Industries in Khera and visited three villages — Dev Khera, Mala Khera and Khush Khera — towards this end, they reached a dead end.

The PP said that it was on August 31 that Agarwal disclosed Khera was in Gujarat. The oil manufacturer also said that he received mustard oil supply from Ambika Oil Industries and Aggarwal Cakes Ltd on July 15, 1998. Asking for a 10-day police remand, the PP submitted that Agarwal will have to be taken to Gujarat to identify the factories and people involved. After this, the police will have to check the records and take samples.
