8226; It8217;s one thing to expect the state to be morally scrupulous and completely another for it to implement hard and fast self-imposing rules regardless of repercussions 8216;State cannot shove morality down our throats and hope we swallow8217;, IE, April 20. An evolved sense of morality is a virtue which has to be inculcated amongst the youth with painstaking efforts. It is not something that can be imposed on them. Instead of closing dance bars, the government should concentrate on proper regulation. Otherwise, if today it is dance bars, tomorrow there may be a ban on liquor and cigarettes. There will be no end to this then.

Right on, Speaker

8226; Kudos to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee for his resolve not to adjourn the House at any cost. On Tuesday, he said he would not adjourn the House henceforth, 8220;come what may8221;. For quite some time we have been seeing unruly behaviour by parliamentarians day in and day out. There is nothing wrong if pandemonium prevails once in a while and things come back to normalcy soon after. But the situation these days is that pandemonium occurs everyday and normalcy seems to be an exception rather than the rule.

Persian persuasion

8226; The article 8216;A pipeline for peace8217; by Michael Krepon and Ziad Haider IE, April 19 hits the bull8217;s eye so far as America8217;s worry over Iran8217;s nuclear ambitions are concerned. If the US is taking so much interest in the issue, it should actually be happy that the gas pipeline proposed to run from Iran to India via Pakistan could be a step towards lasting peace in the Indian subcontinent. Moreover, this project could help temper Iran8217;s nuclear ambitions.

Be tough

8226; It is high time the Indian government took a tough stand on cross-border terrorism with Bangladesh 8216;Simply barbaric8217;, IE, April 20. New Delhi cannot take this lightly. How can India aspire to a permanent seat on the UN Security Council if it cannot even effectively control its own borders?

Curious this

8226; It is disgusting and funny to see UPA ministers saying that they are ready to discuss anything anywhere as they have nothing to hide over the second affidavit on defence purchases during the Kargil conflict 8216;Affidavit issue stalls both Houses, Speaker asks Govt to clear stand on Phukan report8217;, IE, April 20.
If there is nothing to hide, then why not table the Phukan Commission report in Parliament?

Too many appeals

8226; Sourav Ganguly should stop being a selfish cry-baby and return to the national team the old-fashioned way 8216;Sourav loses appeal but Dalmiya says match not over yet8217;, IE, April 19. He should earn his place in the side.
