A security alert has been sounded in all North-East states, barring Mizoram, following a series of strikes by militants in Assam and Nagaland.
Security forces in Assam, where militant outfits NDFB and ULFA struck for the second day today, were on ‘‘“maximum alert’’ with additional troops being deployed, said Director General of Police P V Sumant.
Besides railway track patrols, troops have been alerted along the border to prevent movement of militants, he said.
In Manipur, forces on patrol duty in sensitive areas had been instructed to report any suspicious object or material, with bomb disposal squads on the stand-by.
According to top officials, a counter-insurgency operation will be launched here soon by Army, paramilitary and police in the three districts of Churachandpur, Chandel and Bishenpur.
In Nagaland, police vehicles were patrolling deserted streets with all shops and establishments closed in Dimapur, where two blasts killed 32 people yesterday.
In Arunachal Pradesh, with Assembly elections around the corner, additional check posts had been set up, said State Inspector General of Police P N Agarwal.
All police stations in Meghalaya are on alert too to after the ‘‘incidents in Assam,’’ said police officers.
‘‘(In Tripura) the security alert is on for a fortnight because October 15 is the day of the merger of the erstwhile princely state with India. There are apprehensions of attack or subversive activity,’’ said a senior police officer.
Patrolling around vital installations and border districts in Sikkim have been stepped up too, said officials.
