Accent on fire prevention

MUMBAI, Nov 24: Educating residents in fire safety measures plays a vital role in preventing fire in buildings, said Vivek Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of the Express Group of Newspapers.

Delivering the keynote address at the seminar on Fire Safety in High-rise Buildings8217; organised by the Mumbai Fire brigade today, Goenka said that fire safety measures are best implemented if they are made an integral part of the building plans in future. He said that the new buildings should be fully designed to prevent fire from breaking out.

Goenka stressed the need of providing penal powers to the Fire Brigade, which, he added, should be free from political and bureaucratic pressures. He stressed the need of having stringent and frequent inspections of buildings with more than 12 floors and that every such building should have persons fully trained in fire fighting with the minimal equipment.
