Star drag-flicker Sohail Abbas has welcomed the announcement by the Pakistan Hockey Federation that he and three other players, who had preferred to play in foreign leagues over national duty, would be considered after proving their physical fitness.

8220;It is nice to hear this from the PHF. But what method would be applied to assess our fitness remains to be seen. I can vouch for myself that I have been regularly training and playing in domestic hockey,8221; Abbas said.

Abbas, former captain Mohammad Saqlain, midfielder Waseem Ahmed and Ghazanfar Ali were banned last year in December when they did not turn up for the national hockey trials cum coaching camp that were held to select the squad for the Doha Asian Games.

All these players went ahead and played in foreign hockey leagues in Holland and Germany. Not the first time, Abbas remained at odds with the establishment over his decision to sign contracts with foreign clubs.

The PHF secretary Khalid Mahmood has said that all players 8212; including Saqlain, and Waseem 8212; could now play for the country but only after showing their fitness. 8220;This criteria apply for every player in the country.8221;
