8226; Musharraf8217;s pardon to Dr Khan and the acceptance by the US proves once again the double standards the US maintains in its policies. Saddam Hussein was attacked on the mere suspicion of having weapons of mass destruction, while here there is all the evidence of nuclear proliferation. Pakistan8217;s crimes far exceed those committed by Saddam. The US should not turn a blind eye. For now, it might serve their interest but the weapons given to the countries are also a threat to the US. September 11 could be repeated.

No internal matter

8226; The US8217;s reaction to the pardon of A.Q. Khan by Pakistan is baffling, to say the least. Surely, if a country is proliferating nuclear weapons to three countries, all of which are members of the 8216;axis of evil8217;, it cannot be an 8216;internal matter8217;. By this yardstick, a sovereign nation testing its nuclear weapons responsibly must most definitely be an internal matter. Why was that decision met with sanctions and global condemnation, while this far more serious transgression is merely passed off as an internal matter of Pakistan? It is this kind of blatant opportunism and myopic foreign policy that will cause problems for the US in the long run.

So convenient

8226; It is frustrating to see that the victim of the 9/11 destruction is cosying up to the greatest terrorist nation on earth, whose madrassas have trained, and are still training future jihadi terrorists. It just shows that America will support the most dictatorial and undemocratic regimes in the world when it happens to be convenient.

What difference?

8226; It is doubtful if the advertisement campaign focussing on the revolution in telecommunications unleashed helps the Vajpayee-led NDA in winning the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. It is certainly helping the private cell phone companies boost their sales at public expense. So much for the 8216;8216;party with a difference8217;8217;.

Expert somersault

8226; Seventeen years ago, former PM V.P. Singh had all the incriminating evidence against Rajiv Gandhi for having accepted kickbacks in the Bofors gun deal. He prudently moulded public opinion and dislodged Rajiv. But alas, the glory was short-lived. Now when the court has given a clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi, VPS with an unfazed countenance declares that he never doubted Rajiv8217;s credentials, but only smelt fish in the deal. Thus, VPS has somersaulted with the agility of a deer, taking a mid-air U-turn. His name VPS should stand for 8216;8216;Very Prudent Somersaulter8221;.

Voice of reason

8226; From the din created by the 8216;India Shining8217; cheer-leaders, emerges a voice of reason, justice and common sense. That voice belongs to Anil Sadgopal 8216;Learning about barriers8217;, IE February 6. Of course, the far right of the pseudo-intellectual spectrum won8217;t lose time in branding him a 8216;8216;Marxist8217;8217;.
