To appear for JEE Advanced 2026, Indian Nationals and OCI/PIO candidates must meet all five prescribed criteria simultaneously.
Criterion A1 – Performance in JEE (Main) 2026
Candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (across all categories) in the BE/BTech paper of JEE (Main) 2026.
| Sl No. | Category | Number of “Top” candidates | Total per Category Group |
| 1 | OPEN | 96,187 | 101,250 |
| 2 | OPEN-PwD | 5,063 | |
| 3 | GEN-EWS | 23,750 | 25,000 |
| 4 | GEN-EWS-PwD | 1,250 | |
| 5 | OBC-NCL | 64,125 | 67,500 |
| 6 | OBC-NCL-PwD | 3,375 | |
| 7 | SC | 35,625 | 37,500 |
| 8 | SC-PwD | 1,875 | |
| 9 | ST | 17,812 | 18,750 |
| 10 | ST-PwD | 938 |
Category-wise distribution of shortlisted candidates:
–GEN-EWS: 10%
–OBC-NCL: 27%
–SC: 15%
–ST: 7.5%
–OPEN (all): 40.5%
Additionally, within each of these categories, a 5 per cent horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates. OCI/PIO (I) candidates are not entitled to any reservation benefits such as GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, or ST, with the sole exception of OPEN-PwD. These candidates have to secure a place in the rank lists under the OPEN category.
Criterion A2 – Age Limit
Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2001. A relaxation of five years is granted to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, making them eligible if born on or after October 1, 1996.
Criterion A3 – Number of Attempts
Each candidate is allowed a maximum of two attempts, in two consecutive years.
Criterion A4 – Class 12 (or Equivalent) Examination
Candidates must have appeared for the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
Those who appeared for the first time in 2024 or earlier are not eligible, regardless of subject combinations. Appearance is defined by the declaration of results by the Board, even if the exam was not conducted or the candidate’s result was withheld.
Exception: If a Board declared results for the 2023–24 academic year on or after June 18, 2024, then candidates appearing in 2024 are eligible, provided they meet all other criteria, as mentioned in the detailed notification.
Criterion A5 – Earlier Admission at IITs
–Candidates who have already been admitted to any IIT under programs listed in JoSAA Business Rules 2025 are not eligible, regardless of whether they continued or withdrew.
–Those whose admission was cancelled after joining an IIT are also ineligible.
–Candidates admitted to a preparatory course in 2025 may appear in JEE Advanced 2026.
–Candidates allocated a seat in IITs through JoSAA 2025 but who did not report, withdrew before the final round, or had their seat cancelled before the last round remain eligible, provided they also satisfy Criteria A1–A4.
In line with directives from the Ministry of Education and a decision by the IIT Council, supernumerary seats have been introduced for female candidates to enhance gender balance in undergraduate programmes at IITs.
These seats will be offered to Indian nationals and OCI/PIO (I) candidates who qualify in JEE Advanced 2026, and allocation will be made on the basis of performance in the examination.
The number of supernumerary seats across different programmes will be determined by individual IITs, with the mandate that each institute achieves at least 20 per cent female enrolment in its undergraduate courses.
Candidates will be considered for ranking in JEE Advanced 2026 only if they appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Marks in each subject—Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics—will be calculated by adding scores from the respective sections of both papers. The aggregate score will be the sum of marks obtained across all three subjects, and rank lists will be prepared on this basis.
In case of a tie:
Step 1: Candidates with higher positive marks will be awarded a higher rank.
Step 2: If still tied, preference will be given to the candidate with higher marks in Mathematics.
— If the tie persists, Physics marks will be considered.
–If no distinction can be made, candidates will be assigned the same rank.
Separate rank lists will be prepared for preparatory courses for SC, ST, and PwD candidates who meet relaxed criteria. To qualify, candidates must secure the minimum prescribed percentage of marks in each subject and in aggregate, as per their category. Those eligible under multiple categories will be considered in all applicable lists.
| Rank List | Minimum % of Marks in Each Subject | Minimum % of Aggregate Marks |
| Common Rank List (CRL) | 8.68% | 30.34% |
| OBC-NCL Rank List | 7.80% | 27.30% |
| GEN-EWS Rank List | 7.80% | 27.30% |
| SC Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| ST Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| Common-PwD Rank List (CRL-PwD) | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| OBC-NCL-PwD Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| GEN-EWS-PwD Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| SC-PwD Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| ST-PwD Rank List | 4.34% | 15.17% |
| Preparatory Course (PC) Rank List | 2.17% | 7.58% |
Also, no waiting list will be maintained, and only candidates meeting the minimum subject-wise and aggregate marks will be included in the final rank list
