Chennai, Sept 21An escape attempt by two prisoners remanded to custody in the Egmore court premises, by removing two thin wooden planks on the roof, highlights the need to renovate the ramshackle building. The prison which sometimes has to house as many as 60 persons, does not have the infrastrucutre to do so, especially when it rains. PWD says that the building is structurally stable but needs renovation to the roofing. It has been suggested that the prison be renovated along the lines of the DGP office on Marina or alternately set up a new lock-up.
