8226; Jagat S. Mehta demonstrates the wisdom of India and the kind of statesmanship the world needs in his piece, 8216;Spare the world a nuclear 9/118217; IE, March 11. It is an irrefutable fact that the world leaders, particularly those who profess to be statesmen, have abdicated their moral leadership by their actions. A newer kind of world order is really needed and this is where the advice and plea of Mehta, if followed, would lead to India and Pakistan.

8226; I Strongly disagree with the author when he writes: 8220;The greatest threat to peace and stability in the 21st century comes from two irrationalities: anti-Americanism and Islamaphobia8221;. I do not see either of these as an irrationality. US has been involved in invading/bullying countries and arranging coups. While suggesting that India and Pakistan give up nukes, the author is throwing out the baby with the bath water. Nukes should be kept by responsible nations like India to help reduce bullying from bigger powers and getting invaded like Iraq.

Apex court steps in
8226; The balance between the executive, the legislature and the judiciary cannot be restored with a completely biased and self-centered leadership at every level. It was distressing to find the Lok Sabha speaker waking up to intrusion by the Supreme Court because its decision went against his ruling combine. Earlier, when the Goa governor intruded upon the authority of the speaker of the Goa assembly, he did not feel it necessary to say anything.

8226; I Cannot understand why politicians are taking exception to directives issued by the Supreme Court. What happened in Jharkhand was an attempt to strangulate democracy through dirty politics. The governor himself was engaged in getting directions from New Delhi. The Supreme Court is only trying to do is to take steps to avoid any malafide act in the formation of the government.

Presidential plan
8226; It was quite impressive to read Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam8217;s clear thinking in his speech, 8216;Inspiring models of cleanliness in public life8217; IE, March 10. This problem is not necessarily limited to rural villages alone, it does impact even urban centres in the country. In order to minimise the health risks emanating from poor sanitary conditions in many rural villages and urban centres, there should be a clear mandate from the ministry of health to enforce the measures Kalam has suggested. Educational institutions around the country should impart this sanitary training to students at a very early age and make them aware of the benefits of a clean society and the impact it has on general health.

Upgrade the aircraft
8226; The piece, 8216;Don8217;t have magic wand to wave away MiG troubles: Tyagi8217; IE, March 10, is thought provoking. India should buy new more powerful MiG engines for all MiG-21 Bis, MiG-27 and MiG-29 aircraft. Similarly, all Jaguar aircraft should be upgraded to the Super Jaguar configuration. India should reduce aircraft types by selling off its Mig-23 and Mig-25 aircraft. These steps will bring down the IAF8217;s accident rate and make it a more efficient force.
