Armed militants, suspected to be members of the outlawed Karbi Longri National Liberation Front KLNLF, gunned down eight persons, all settlers from Bihar, in Assam8217;s Karbi Anglong hill district late on Wednesday.
Official reports available here said a group of 20 to 25 militants, who were heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, swooped down on a settlement at Ampathar village under Howraghat police station and fired indiscriminately on the people, killing four women, three children and a man on the spot.
Assam Police DIG L R Bishnoi said over the telephone from Diphu, the Karbi Anglong district headquarters, that though the culprits belonged to the KLNLF, the possibility of the presence of some ULFA cadres could not be ruled out. The ULFA has recently set up some camps in the Karbi Anglong hills.
However, Karbi Anglong SP Anurag Tangkha confirmed the involvement of the ULFA, saying the ULFA and KLNLF had common interest in driving out people from Bihar and non-tribals respectively. 8220;The KLNLF is known for its stand of driving out non-tribals from the hill district, while the ULFA has its occasional bouts against Hindi-speaking people,8221; Tangkha said.
