PUNE, Oct 19: Five out of eight youths, who admitted to killing four teenaged children from Aranyeshwar during their interrogation for two theft cases, were re-arrested on murder charges this afternoon.
They include: Mangesh alias Mangilal Kunaji Solanki (20), Anya alias Bhagyavant Ankush Jadhav (20), Hanumanth alias Hanya Ankush Jadhav (18), Dashrath alias Dashya Balu Devavat (18) and Manik Balu Devavat (20). Their accomplice Dada Manik Nipankrar (18), suspected in a theft case, was granted bail.
Mangesh, Manik and Hanumanth are suspects in the murder of Ashok Mohan Gaikwad (27) of Annabhau Sathe Nagar in Aranyeshwar area atop Taljai Hills. Dasharath and Hanumant are suspects in the killing of Rajesh Murlidhar Balvadkar (16) at the same place.
The eight youths were arrested by Sahakarnagar police on October 13 for their suspected involvement in two separate thefts.Mangesh, Anya, Nilesh Kamble and Santosh Patole have been accused of stealing booty worth Rs 2.40 lakh from Dhankawadi residence of Anasuya Popatlal Ghadge in December.
Hanumant, Dasharath, Dada and Manik are charged with stealing a television set, a VCP and a tape recorder from a bus parked near Taljai on November 30.
The eight youths were produced before Judicial Magistrate (First Class) S V Bhutke on Monday afternoon. The magistrate extended the police custody of Mangesh, Anya, Nilesh and Santosh for two days for burglary at Dhankawadi. Hanumant, Dasharath, Dada and Manik were remanded to magisterial custody in the theft case.
Shortly after this, the police rearrested five of them. They were produced before the magistrate who remanded them to police custody.
Dashrath was remanded to police custody till October 26 while the others were remanded to a two-day police custody. Dada was granted bail on a bond of Rs 3,000 and producing a solvent surety.
The prosecution pleaded for extended police custody in the theft cases. It stated that booty worth Rs 1.40 lakh stolen from Dhankawadi was yet to be recovered.
While praying for police custody in the two murder cases, the prosecution argued that the victims’ bodies have not been located and also the murder weapons were yet to be recovered. Defence counsels Rajendra Sonawale and Atul P Malviya argued that little progress was made in the investigations during the last two days.
