34 years in jail, man sets out looking for his relatives

Mentally challenged Prabhunath will have a tough time looking for his relatives in UP after spending 34 yrs in Jaipur jail.

.

A mentally-challenged man, who spent 34 years in prison on charges of intruding along the Indo-Pak border, left for his home in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Uncertain of his future as he will be brought back to the asylum in Jaipur if his relatives fail to recognise him.

Prabhunath seemed to find some justice on Tuesday as Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Srikaranpur) Rakesh Sharma ordered for his immediate release. Sharma, in his order, said since Prabhunath is mentally ill he should be immediately sent to his native town in Uttar Pradesh.

A police team took Prabhunath to Uttar Pradesh by the Marudhar Express train from the Jaipur railway station. But that is not the end of the story. During his prison term, no one was reported to have contacted Prabhunath or inquired for him, officials said.

“In case police fail to find any relative in Prabhunath’s recorded address, he will be brought to Jaipur’s Mental hospital where he was undergoing treatment,” IG (Jail) S P Khadkawat said.

Prabhunath underwent treatment at the asylum near the jail and even had psychiatrists attending to him in his cell. He was arrested on May 14, 1974 from Srikaranpur in Rajasthan’s Sriganganagar district on charges of intrusion, Khadkawat said.

A case was registered against him and four days later Prabhunath was sent to judicial custody, he said. Though the police initially failed to file a formal complaint against him, they submitted a final report saying he did not commit any crime.
