MUMBAI, DEC 12: In a span of a couple of hours, the Mumbai police have gunned down three extortionists in two separate incidents in the north-western suburbs of the city.

In the first incident, at around 1.30 the police, acting on a tipoff, laid a trap at a builder8217;s office near Navrang Cinema expecting two extortionists who were threatening the builder for the last three month to pay Rs 2 lakh or stop work.

When the duo came, the police team surrounded them and asked them to surrender. However, they opened fire on the police. Retaliating, the police fired back, in the process injuring the two. The duo were rushed to the Cooper Hospital where they were declared dead before admission.

The duo have been identified as Ravindra Shankar Jagtap and Chandrashekhar Rao. According to the police, they were independent operators and were involved in several cases of murder, extortion, assault and threats.The other encounter happened at around 3.15 pm. The police were tipped off about a suspiciously movingred-coloured van near Polychem company at Piramal Nagar in Goregaon.

A police team from the Goregaon police reached the spot and ordered the passengers to come out. Instead one of them started firing at the police. Sub-inspector Nitin Vichare who led the police team fired back. In the exchange of fire, the shooter, who had fired four rounds by then, was injured. He was taken to Bhagwati Hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The van driver, however, managed to escape.
