
At least 19 people were injured, three of them critically, in an explosion at the busy Fancy Bazar locality of Guwahati today. ULFA militants are suspected to be behind the blast that occurred at around 6:15 pm.
The blast occurred two days ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh8217;s visit to Guwahati. Singh is scheduled to arrive here on Tuesday to file his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha poll.
The bomb, suspected to be a programmable time device PTD, was kept on a motorcycle parked near a temple in Fancy Bazar.
Six needed only first aid, while six others were admitted to the MMC Hospital. The condition of three of them is said to be critical.
8220;The militants must have left the motorcycle with the bomb near the temple a few minutes before it exploded,8221; Guwahati City SSP S N Singh said, pointing the finger at the ULFA.
Fancy Bazar, the wholesale business hub of the entire Northeast, is dominated by Marwaris.
This is the second blast in Guwahati and the third in the state in the past four days. On Friday, a blast had occurred in the parking area of the Food Corporation of India godowns at Bamunimaidam in Guwahati, while seven persons were injured in a blast at Tinsukia.
In January this year, the ULFA had killed over 70 Hindi-speaking people in Tinsukia alone.
