More than 150 people were feared killed in flash floods inGoalpara district since Thursday night. More than 121 bodies were recovered till this evening.

The flash floods were triggered by the swelling of Krishnai and Jinari rivers. While 86 bodies were fished out today from seven villages 8212; Balbala, Khagrabari, Pajabandha, Goalpariyagaon, Khalisamari, Tukrapar and Chandamari 8212; under Goalpara PS, 28 have been recovered from Bheltarghat and Asudubi, both under Krishnai PS. Villagers as well as Army personnel engaged in the operations said more people were missing.

The flash floods that swept through the area for about four hours is believed to have occurred due to a dam burst in the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, Goalpara Deputy Commissioner Dipak Goswami said.

Lok Sabha MP Kirip Chaliha has asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to conduct an aerial survey over the adjoining Garo Hills to ascertain the cause of the disaster. The Chief Minister is visiting the area tomorrow.

8216;8216;It was raining since Thursday morning and water of the overflowing Krishnai river had entered our villages. But as it began to recede by afternoon, we thought things would be better by Friday. But at 2 am, there was a huge roaring sound and a massive wave of water suddenly washed everything away, including women and children,8217;8217; said Matiur Rahman, a farmer from Pajabandha village. The body of one of his four sons had been recovered by jawans of the 11 Engineering Regiment today, while another is still missing.

At Krishnai town on N-H 37, an Ambassador and a Mahindra mini truck were washed away. Shops and houses along the highway were also damaged.

At Dudhnoi, local MLA Pranay Rabha said the flash floods came down towards Bheltarghat, Asudubi and other villages directly from the Garo Hills. 8216;8216;The flood water came at 2 am on Friday, destroying standing crops, houses, wooden bridges and uprooting trees,8217;8217; he said.
