The way you sleep could make you look older
Ever wake up with sleep lines etched into your cheeks or puffiness around your eyes? Over time, these seemingly temporary imprints may start to linger.

We often turn to skincare products, treatments, and even diet to slow down visible signs of ageing. But one thing that’s rarely talked about is how the way we sleep could be playing a quiet role in speeding it up.
That’s right, your sleep posture might be leaving more of a mark — literally — than you realise.
Ever wake up with sleep lines etched into your cheeks or puffiness around your eyes? Over time, these seemingly temporary imprints may start to linger, affecting skin elasticity and facial symmetry.
But, can certain sleep positions actually contribute to premature wrinkles or sagging skin over time?
Dr Lakshya Bhaktyani, physiotherapist at PSRI Hospital, tells indianexpress.com, “Certain sleep positions can contribute to skin ageing. Sleeping on your side or stomach can cause your face to press against the pillow, creating friction and compression. Over time, this repeated pressure can lead to the development of ‘sleep lines’ creases that may eventually turn into permanent wrinkles, especially around the cheeks, forehead, and chin. Side-sleeping can also contribute to sagging skin due to gravitational pull, particularly on the jawline and neck.”
People often notice puffiness or creases when they wake up — are these signs of deeper skin or structural changes caused by sleep habits?
Morning puffiness and creases are usually temporary and caused by fluid retention or pressure from sleeping positions.
“However, if these patterns persist daily over a long period, they could gradually lead to permanent changes in skin elasticity and collagen breakdown. Persistent puffiness may also signal poor lymphatic drainage or underlying health issues, but in most cases, it’s a result of how and where pressure is applied during sleep,” notes Dr Bhaktyani.
Pillow types, fabrics, or sleep postures that can help prevent or minimise sleep-related skin ageing
According to Dr Bhaktyani, choosing the right pillow and fabric can help. Silk or satin pillowcases reduce friction and prevent skin creasing compared to cotton ones. Orthopaedic or memory foam pillows can offer better support and reduce facial pressure.
“Sleeping on your back is the most skin-friendly position, as it avoids direct compression of facial tissues. Elevating the head slightly may also help reduce fluid accumulation around the eyes, preventing morning puffiness,” he suggests.
