Not just Kim Kardashian, Richa Chadha too has tried the vampire facial and, by her own admission, loves the results. “I get something done called vampire facial, which I enjoy a lot,” the actor told Cyrus Broacha on his YouTube channel in 2023.

In the now-viral video, she is also seen explaining the procedure. “You draw a little bit of blood. Then they take a tiny, prickly metallic roller, which, when rolled, causes slight abrasions on your skin. They separate the blood from the plasma such that they put the plasma on the skin. So, you have tricked the body into thinking that you have a wound,” said Chadha.

So, when it gets plasma, “it gets a sense of blood”. “It (the body) rushes to make more collagen. So, one day, you have really rough skin but the next day, you have baby skin,” Chadha continued.

What exactly is a vampire facial, and is it beneficial for the skin?

A vampire facial is a skincare treatment that has gained wide popularity on social media platforms.

In this particular treatment, an individual’s blood is used to rejuvenate their skin. “It mainly involves drawing a small amount of blood from your body while separating the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from it. Then, the PRP is applied or injected into your face along with microneedling. This entire treatment procedure can take up to 45 minutes or more,” said Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai.

Dr Chause stressed that many undergo this skin treatment as they believe it can help boost their collagen, reduce the visibility of wrinkles, improve skin texture such that it provides baby-soft skin, and also leave a long-lasting glow on their face, making them look much younger. However, one needs to understand that along with promising benefits, this procedure also comes with its own sets of downsides. “It can cause various post-effects like redness, increased skin sensitivity, and bruising,” said Dr Chause.

The vampire facial can increase the risk of infection if not done correctly, cautioned Dr Chause.

“People with active skin infections, blood disorders, or certain medical conditions should avoid hopping on this trend,” said Dr Chause.

The cost of vampire facials can vary based on the type of clinic and location you choose.

Individuals are advised to consult a dermatologist before undergoing this procedure. Ensure that you choose a clinic that has a licensed professional and follow post-care as instructed by your dermatologist to avoid any type of side effects.
