As much you love the mascara that refuses to budge, even through the entire length of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham as you ugly cry, your eyes hate it. It might come as a surprise to some but waterproof makeup is awful for your eyes.

Though Dr Puneet Jain, senior consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, understands the allure of waterproof makeup, he said many potential hazards lurk in its usage: “These makeup products, engineered to defy smudging and wear, can be notably challenging to remove, often requiring vigorous effort.” The struggle of removing a matte lipstick or smudge-proof mascara is indeed real.

This can lead to irritation or even damage to the sensitive eyelashes, and redness.

Dr Ajay Sharma, chief medical director of Eye-Q Super Speciality Hospitals added that waterproof makeup can clog the pores of your skin, including the glands around your eyes. “This can lead to conditions like styes or chalazia, which are painful and can affect your vision.”

How can you protect your eyes?

  1. 01

    Key is to be gentle

Central to this is the art of gentle yet effective removal. Invest in a gentle, oil-based makeup remover specifically designed for waterproof makeup. Apply the remover with a soft cotton pad, and avoid excessive rubbing or tugging. Allow the product to dissolve the makeup before wiping it away.

  2. 02

    Choose high-quality products

Opt for reputable and high-quality brands that are less likely to contain harsh or irritating chemicals. Look for makeup specifically labelled as suitable for sensitive eyes.

  3. 03

    Do a patch test

Before applying any waterproof makeup around your eyes, perform a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure you don't have an allergic reaction or irritation.

  4. 04

    Limit the usage

Reserve waterproof makeup for special occasions or when it's necessary, like during swimming or on a rainy day. Diversifying makeup routines, by alternating with non-waterproof products, provides eyes with necessary breaks.

  5. 05

    Hydrate and cleanse

Ensure you keep the skin around your eyes well-moisturised and cleanse your face thoroughly at the end of the day. Proper hydration and cleansing help maintain skin health.

  6. 06

    Practice proper hygiene

Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes or applying makeup to reduce the risk of infection. Maintaining pristine hygiene, with frequent cleaning of brushes and applicators, further minimises risks.

  7. 07

Keep a check on the expiry date

Regular inspections of makeup product expiry dates are paramount, guarding against the use of outdated items.
