Sharing the benefits, Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics said that rice flour acts as a gentle exfoliator that helps remove dead skin cells, dirt, and impurities.

“Additionally, rice flour contains amino acids that aid in collagen production, promoting a youthful and radiant complexion. Honey is another star ingredient in this mask. Its natural antimicrobial properties help fight bacteria and heal acne-prone skin. Furthermore, honey acts as a humectant by locking the moisture of the skin and locking it in place. This prevents dryness and leaves the skin feeling soft and supple,” she said.

Dr Kapoor mentioned that this combination of rice flour and honey creates an effective treatment for acne scars with regular use even lightening dark spots and evening out the complexion. “Lastly, milk adds another layer of nourishment to this miracle mask. Rich in vitamins A and D, milk helps soothe irritated skin while reducing inflammation. The lactic acid present in milk further assists in gently exfoliating the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal renewed radiance beneath,” she said.

However, one possible side-effect of using this rice mask is dryness. “Rice flour has absorbent properties that can draw out excessive oil from the skin, which may leave some people with drier patches on their faces,” the expert said.

To combat this issue, it’s essential to moisturise your skin properly before applying the mask and following it up with a nourishing moisturiser afterward.

“Another potential side effect of using a rice mask is increased sensitivity or irritation for individuals with sensitive skin. While rice flour is considered gentle on the skin, some people may experience redness or discomfort after using it. If you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies, it’s advisable to patch-test the mixture on a small area of your skin before applying it all over your face.

Dr Navya Handa, dermatologist, cosmetologist and laser surgeon, Primus Super Speciality Hospital shared other possible side effects:

*Allergic reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to ingredients like honey or milk. Perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying the mask to your face to check for any adverse reactions.
*Breakouts: While the mask may benefit some, it could potentially cause breakouts in others, especially if the skin is sensitive to any of the ingredients.
*Overuse: Using the mask too frequently or leaving it on for too long may lead to over-exfoliation, which can damage the skin’s barrier and cause redness, dryness, or increased sensitivity.
*Ineffective for all skin types: What works for one person’s skin may not work for another. The effectiveness of this mask can vary depending on individual skin types and concerns.

Before trying any DIY skincare treatment, it’s essential to consider your skin type, allergies, and potential sensitivities. “If you decide to use the Japanese rice mask or any homemade skincare remedy, do a patch test first and use it in moderation. It’s also a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional to ensure that the treatment is suitable for your specific skin needs and won’t cause any adverse effects,” Dr Handa said.
