In a resurfaced clip, actor Priyanka Chopra can be seen discussing how she uses organic coconut oil to remove her makeup, which also leaves her dry skin feeling moisturised. “I use organic coconut oil, which is amazing. Keep it on the face for a couple of minutes, take a hand towel, put it in hot water, and once it is moist, just gently rub it against the skin. It exfoliates and hydrates at the same time, and also just takes off all your makeup. That really helped with my dry skin,” she says to her mother in the video.
But, the Quantico actor is not the only one who swears by coconut oil to address their skin woes. However, do experts recommend the same? Answering the same is Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, a dermatologist, who took to Instagram to write: “Coconut oil is comedogenic — which means it has the potential to clog pores,” adding that while it helps remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil without drying the skin, “it is not ideal as a moisturiser if your skin is acne prone.”
However, for those who intend to use the ingredient for removing makeup, she suggests massaging a small amount (about a teaspoon size) onto the skin, rinsing thoroughly with warm water, and then gently drying the skin with a towel. “Not all skin types are compatible with the oil, so introducing a little at a time will help keep possible breakouts at bay. And remember, it should not be your be-all and end-all skin product,” she writes, further advising the use of cold-pressed, organic, virgin, or unrefined coconut oil when shopping for a makeup remover.

According to experts, while coconut oil can be used as a makeup remover, one must note that its oily texture can have negative effects on certain skin types. “The oil can potentially clog pores, which can lead to acne and other skin irritations. To avoid these issues, it’s recommended to use a gentle cleanser to wash the face after using coconut oil as a makeup remover. By doing so, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed of any remaining oil, dirt, or makeup residue, without causing any unnecessary irritation or breakouts,” Dr Kalpana Sarangi, Senior Consultant, Cosmetic Dermatology, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital tells indianexpress.com.
Concurring, Dr Swapna Priya Consultant – Dermatology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad says that coconut oil can be an effective and natural makeup remover as it gently and effectively removes makeup, including one that is waterproof. But, when using coconut oil as a makeup remover, it is important to use organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed coconut oil, as these varieties are pure and natural, and they do not contain any additives or chemicals that can irritate the skin. However, always do a patch test before using it all over the face to ensure that it doesn’t cause any allergic reactions or irritation”.
“While coconut oil is generally safe for most skin types, it is important to consider your skin type and any specific skin concerns you may have. People with oily or acne-prone skin should be cautious when using coconut oil as a makeup remover, as it can clog pores and potentially worsen acne,” says Dr Priya.
