Father’s Day 2023 date: June 18 is not just another Sunday in India this year, it is Father’s Day.

The third Sunday of June in India is specially allocated to celebrate our fathers; in many cases, our personal heroes. However, many extend this honour to not just their own fathers but also several father figures in their lives.

It is not restricted to just India.

Father’s Day is an international event, initially originating in the United States of America where the daughter of a war veteran Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to pay an ode to all fathers in the world.

The love for her single father, William Jackson Smart, who raised six children while also being a civil war veteran, made her choose her father’s birth anniversary, June 5, 1982 as a celebration of Father’s Day. It is said that she was inspired by Anna Jarvis who founded Mother’s Day to celebrate her mother.

However, Dodd’s journey to establishing this day was far from smooth. Her petition to the church and her pastor was declined, and she had to rally several other local church members for support. Eventually, the date was pushed from June 5 to the third Sunday of June as the ministers needed time to prepare for the celebration. First celebrated in 1910, over a hundred years later, Dodd’s efforts continue to echo.

How Father’s Day is celebrated

Today, over 13 thousand kilometers away, in India, this day holds a special place in all our hearts. From school celebrations to home parties, the spirit of Father’s Day is kept alive in all ways possible.

On this day, children make their fathers feel special and loved by exchanging cards, preparing their favourite meals, baking cakes, or even presenting flowers and gifts as a token of their love and gratitude. From making handcrafted gifts to doing fun activities with their dads or simply binge-watching films, fathers and their children can do a lot of activities together.
