Should you apply coffee on your face? (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock)Who does not love a quick and easy skincare hack that promises results? The internet is overflowing with them, but it is essential to be cautious before trying them. One such viral remedy is the topical application of coffee powder or coffee granules on the skin, irrespective of the skin type. Many influencers on social media swear by applying coffee as a remedy for dark circles, and an exfoliator that helps brighten tanned skin. But are these claims true? We decided to turn to a dermatologist to verify these claims.
Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist and cosmetologist, Shareefa’s Skin Care Clinic said that coffee has become an important part of our lives. “Not only it is used in drinks but also has a high value in many dermatological and cosmetological products, like sunscreen, undereye creams, etc,” said Dr Chause.
According to Healthline, applying coffee directly on the skin can help decrease the appearance of sunspots, redness, and fine lines due to chlorogenic acid and melanoidins in coffee which are said to have anti-inflammatory effects.
Undoubtedly, coffee, which contains caffeine, helps with UV ray protection and wound healing but if used in excess can cause loss of collagen, said Dr Chause. “People with dry and sensitive skin should avoid the application of caffeine or any caffeine-comprising products as it will cause skin irritation,” mentioned Dr Chause.
Applying it directly can lead to several skin problems such as redness, breakouts, and acne. According to Dr Chause, applying coffee directly on the face can lead to under-eye dryness, and even micro-tear in some cases.
Moreover, people with sensitive skin can experience various allergies like rashes, burning sensations, and itching.
Another factor to consider is the pH level of coffee. “Coffee has a specific pH that may disrupt the natural balance of your skin. Your skin’s pH balance is vital for its overall health and function, as it helps protect against harmful bacteria and environmental pollutants. Disrupting this balance can lead to dryness, irritation, and an increased risk of skin infections,” explained Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD – plastic, dermatology, and cosmetic surgery at Paras Health Gurugram.
Moreover, the granules of coffee can sometimes be too large and may clog pores rather than providing the desired exfoliating effect. “When coffee is not finely ground, it can obstruct the pores, leading to breakouts and other skin issues. This can be particularly problematic for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin, as clogged pores can exacerbate these conditions,” said Dr Singh.
Therefore, it is important to be cautious when applying anything on your face, as your facial skin is more sensitive and fragile. “Always, consult your doctor for medical guidance before trying new hacks or home remedies on your face to avoid any allergic reaction,” said Dr Chause.
