Fragrance and haircare are both integral parts of our beauty regimen, and while all of us love the scent of freshly washed hair, spraying our hair with regular perfumes is certainly not the answer.

With brands coming out with their own wide range of offerings that promise to make your tresses smell a million bucks, hair perfumes come in handy when you need to meet people right after a sweaty gym session, or have a party to attend and heads to turn. But while regular perfumes come under the spotlight for their harsh ingredients and side effects that cause skin irritation, the question on whether hair perfumes are safe or not may leave you wondering.

Indianexpress.com spoke to a haircare expert to found out whether you can make these a part of your regular routine without worrying about the health of your locks.

“Infused with delicate aromas, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, hair perfumes work wonders as nourishing agents, which makes them a must-have for lasting fragrance and freshness in the scorching summer heat,” said Dr Simal Soin, Founder and Chief Dermatologist, AAYNA Clinics and Chief Medical Officer, Clinikally.

Are they damaging to the hair?

“There has been a lot of debate regarding the use of harmful products, especially when it comes to haircare. Hair perfumes are actually great for your hair as they are formulated with nourishing ingredients. Since hair perfumes are usually water-based with a minute amount of alcohol, you can be assured that they won’t dry out your hair like the alcohol-scented body fragrances,” she explained.

Being perfectly safe for all hair types, they are ideal for freshening oily hair, as well as providing nourishment to dry and damaged hair, she said.

Safer alternatives to explore

Although hair perfumes are perfectly safe, if you are still doubtful, Dr Soin suggested opting for much safer alternatives like hair mists, essential oils, and serums.

“You can always start by experimenting with essential oils, as they are made with natural ingredients, and can help you achieve a very subtle and organic scent. Also, homemade hair mists are ideal if you’re looking for an excellent alternative for adding a fresh scent to your hair without relying on chemical-infused products,” she said.

Last but not least, hair serums are also a perfect combination of fragrance and nourishment, leaving your ends healthy and fresh, she added.

Key things to keep in mind while picking out hair perfumes

“Choosing hair perfumes is certainly a subjective experience. However, it is significant to pick out a product that complements your hair type,” advised Dr Soin.

She also suggested choosing hair perfumes that come with hair-friendly formulations and alcohol-free scents that are packed with naturally hydrating ingredients.

“To avoid any allergies or harsh damage, it is always wise to conduct a patch test. After considering your sensitivity and preferences, it’s pivotal that you read reviews and customer feedback to learn more about the durability, effectiveness, and any possible side-effects,” she said.

Nevertheless, if you still find yourself in a dilemma, taking help from your dermatologist, can get you closer to the right pick.
