When bowel movements are infrequent or irregular, it can lead to discomfort and potential health issues. “Not clearing your bowels daily may result in a buildup of waste in the colon, leading to bloating, abdominal pain, and a feeling of heaviness,” said Dr Vikas Jindal, consultant, dept of gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.

“Over time, chronic constipation can strain the rectum and pelvic muscles, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids and anal fissures. In severe cases, prolonged stool retention can lead to fecal impaction, which may require medical intervention,” said Dr Jindal.

Dr Rahul Dubbaka, Consultant, gastroenterology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, elaborated that it is a common condition that can occur for a variety of reasons, including dehydration, lack of physical activity, certain medications, and medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, or diabetes.

In other words, when the stool moves too slowly, it can become hard and difficult to pass, causing discomfort.

What can be done?

To maintain regular bowel movements, prioritise a diet rich in fibre, including whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. “Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as it helps soften stools,” said Dr Jindal.

Regular physical activity can stimulate intestinal movement and promote digestion, added Dr Jindal.

Establish a consistent bathroom routine, preferably after meals, to encourage the natural urge to defecate. Avoid overuse of laxatives as they can weaken bowel muscles over time.

What to note?

If irregular bowel movements persist despite lifestyle changes, it may indicate underlying issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypothyroidism, or a dietary imbalance. “Seek medical advice if symptoms are accompanied by severe pain, blood in stools, or unexplained weight loss, as these could signal more serious conditions,” said Dr Jindal.

While over-the-counter laxatives, bulk-forming agents, and stimulants can help relieve the condition, these should be used with caution and only under the guidance of a healthcare professional, said Dr Dubbaka.
