Gynaecologists in New Delhi are using a film during caesareans to avoid post-op and future complications. Developed as a barrier to the complications,this film is a simple clear piece spread across the tissues and proven to be safe. Dr. Meena Naik,Senior Consultant and Gynaec Laparoscopic surgeon,Max Hospital,Saket says I have used this film in a few c-sections over the past four months and the results have been encouraging. While it helps patients to recover fast,it is also beneficial for us surgeons to carry out another surgery at a later date. Recently,a patient had to undergo laparoscopic myomectomy within six weeks after her C-section and the complications generally witnessed in such cases had evidently reduced as I had used this film during her cesarean. Experts say that the complications after cesareans and during repeat cesareans can be attributed to adhesions,a condition where two or more parts of tissues bind together leading to restricted movement of the organs. These adhesions are also one of the key factors delaying recovery after C-sections. Further explains Dr. Meenakshi Sahuta,Senior Consultant (Obstetrics and Gynaecology),Paras Hospital Adhesion formation resulting from caesarean delivery is common and significantly contributes to the risk of complications during repeat caesareans. Adhesions are fibrous bands that form between tissues and organs. They may be thought of as internal scar tissues. Adhesions arising from cesarean deliveries can also contribute to other complications such as small bowel obstruction,chronic pelvic pain, re-operation complexity etc. Its been reported that over 93% of abdominal surgeries give way to adhesions. The film,an adhesion barrier sticks to the internal tissues and separates the organs to prevent them from attaching to one another as they heal. Once placed inside the body,it becomes a gel and also quickly absorbs in a weeks time. The patient doesnt feel its presence. This product is a recent introduction to Indian market but in use in the U.S and other markets in most procedures for over 15 years. Its proven to be safe and efficacious and approved for abdominal,pelvic and thoracic applications.
