Pineapple – helps ease cramps
Watermelon – Treats inflammation
Ginger – helps with bloating
Beetroot – Boosts your energy levels
Lemon – Helps in reducing fatigue and mood swings

Let’s understand more about why should we limit our intake of sugar delights during periods

While many crave a sugary delight during menstruation, curbing this urge can help in reducing your cramps, concurred registered dietitian Garima Goyal. “High sugar intake has been linked to increased inflammation in the body. Menstruation can already cause inflammation and discomfort for some individuals. Limiting sugary treats may help reduce inflammation and potentially alleviate some menstrual symptoms,” Goyal said.

Further, sugar produces energy that is not sustained for a longer period of time and can also spoil your appetite, Goyal stressed. “While it may be hard to cut down sugar totally, you may ensure to have adequate protein and complex carbohydrates in the diet as well for proper energy and blood glucose regulation,” said Goyal.

So, how do some foods help?

Pineapple

Pineapple, a tropical fruit bursting with flavour, holds remarkable benefits for relieving period cramps. Packed with an enzyme called bromelain, pineapple possesses natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the intensity of cramps. Additionally, pineapple is rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C, which supports the immune system and aids in reducing inflammation.

Watermelon

Watermelon is packed with essential nutrients like lycopene, a powerful antioxidant known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Lycopene helps combat free radicals in the body, thereby reducing inflammation and potentially easing discomfort. The abundant water content in watermelon helps you with hydration which is crucial during menstruation.

Ginger

Ginger, a popular spice known for its distinctive flavor, has been recognized for its potential role in relieving period cramps. Studies have suggested that ginger possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with menstrual cramps. Adding them to your tea or regularly in cooking can help in managing the pain, Goyal said.

Beetroot

Beta-carotene and antioxidants found in beetroot are thought to help increase the flow of oxygenated blood to the uterus, which in turn reduces inflammation and lessens the discomfort and intensity of menstrual cramps. The moderate iron content of beetroot can also help in preventing any deficiencies, thus mitigating fatigue.

According to Goyal, lemons are rich in vitamin C, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to support the immune system. “By reducing inflammation, vitamin C may help ease the severity of menstrual cramps. Additionally, lemon water or juice, or lemonade can aid in hydration, which is essential for maintaining proper bodily functions and potentially reducing muscle cramping,” said Goyal.
